Tried them all--THIS is the best for teaching preK kids
Absolutely terrific book! Lots and lots of pictures with easy words to read. The pictures keep the words interesting, the large font allows them to turn the page often, the different color print makes it a breeze to teach them familiar letter combinations, and stickers reward them. for progress made. I am actually online now to find out if this is part of a series...if so, I intend to get them all!

My Phonics Word Book II

Authors: Cass Hollander and Polly Jordan
Average review score:

Great book + illustrations makes reading and writing fun
This book is great; I use it to teach the children who come to our day camp at Spirit and Truth Church in philly. A lot of the words they know how to say; but don't know how to read or write. This book allows them to do all three really easily; it's so helpful that the words rhyme; sounding out words has never been easier for these children. The way the new words are set up makes reading and learning new words easy; it's great for their self-confidence. Also, the clever pictures are interesting to look and make sentences with.

Nothing Sacred: Nazi Espionage Against the Vatican, 1939-1945 (Cass Series--Studies in Intelligence)
Published in Paperback by Frank Cass & Co (February, 1998)
Authors: David J. Alvarez and Robert A. Graham
Average review score:

Another One for the Specialist
Frank Cass among other things publishes several scholarly journals including Intelligence and National Security, one of the bulwarks of the historical genre. Ocasionally one of the issues is repackaged and presented as a standalone volume. They consist of many short articles.
Others in this series are complete studies prepared by one or more authors. The present volume is one of the latter.
Quite interesting but exceedingly narrow in scope. Little would be gained by a detailed analysis. The title says it all.
This is of interest only to the specialist. We must be thankful that Cass finds it practical to publish for us.

Oxford Exit
Published in Audio Cassette by Isis Audio (April, 1998)
Authors: Veronica Stallwood, Karen Cass, and Nigel Carrington
Average review score:

The second and best of the three Kate Ivory books!
In Death and the Oxford Box, the first Kate Ivory mystery, Stallwood did an able job of introducing a likeable writer/amateur sleuth, although the plot wasn't particularly compelling. In the third installment, Oxford Mourning, Stallwood adopted Rendell/Vine narrative techniques -- to solid (albeit amateurish) effect. In this, the second of the three Kate Ivory mysteries, however, character, plot, and technique coalesce to wonderfully entertaining result. Don't be put off by the crusty library setting; it is, in fact, one of the most intriguing aspects of the mystery.

The antics and volume of her neighbors are preventing Kate from concentrating on her manuscript. Worried that the advance will run out before she has finished the work, she reluctantly accepts friend and former lover Andrew's offer of a job tracking down the culprits in a series of Oxford library thefts. Excerpts from the troubling submissions of one anonymous student in a in a creative writing class parallel Kate's trail through the libraries of Oxford to California and back. How are these dark self-revelations related to Kate and the disappearance of rare books?

Alas, Stallwood's mysteries are now out of print. To feed your taste for the writer/English professor-turned-sleuth genre, then, seek out Joanne Dobson's Karen Pelletier mysteries, Edith Skom's Beth Austin series, and -- most recommended -- Amanda Cross' Kate Fansler books.

The Partial Constitution
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (May, 1993)
Author: Cass R. Sunstein
Average review score:

A powerful contribution do constitucional doctrine
When I was in my first years teaching constitutional law and writing a book on church and state in Portugal this book was perhaps the most important I read. The insights of Cass Sunstein helped to build a more persuasive case for religions freedom and equality in Portugal. Cass Sunstein addresses the constitutional question of determining the right baselines in those cases in which a Constitution confronts historically consolidated situations of inequality. In this cases, one must remember that the historical process is not necessarily a legitimate one. For instance (and this is where Sunstein'work was important to me), in Portugal the Catholic Church became the dominant religion, not by means of gentle persuasion in a free marketplace of ideas, but through coercion, persecution and discrimination. This means that the search for the right baseline for treating equally the different religious groups in contemporary Portugal cannot start with the acritical acceptance of the current situation of fact. If a Constitution accepts reality as it is, without any concern for how this reality came to be, this constitution will turn out to be a partial constitution. Much more could be said about it, but my point is that Sunstein's argument, developed trough many topics that have nothing to do with church and state problems, in fact helped to shape the current debate on church and state relations in Portugal, by focusing on the ilegitimate ways in which the dominant religion became so dominant and, by that, by allocating more theoretic and normative resources to the protection of religious minorities. After reading this book I've always tried to read everything I can from Sunstein. He is a great professor even when ocasionally I don't agree with him.

Prized Possessions (6 Cass)
Published in Audio Cassette by Bookcassette (September, 1991)
Authors: Avery Corman and Jean Reed-Bahle
Average review score:

Excellent, more please
Avery Gorman's book is about a girl who is date raped and her fight to regain her soul. It raises an important question about our whole approach to sexual morality. In our society it is increasingly suggested that we should by sexually desirable and experienced in order to be popular and happy, and that our qualities be publically and even aggressively transmitted. Sex comes first, then, possibily, respect, love, commitment. I suggest this is all back to front. ANY sexual encounter can lead to rape. If we viewd relationships differently, that truly fulfilling sex only follows after respect, love and commitment, there would be no date-rape. This is NOT to say that a girl who is date-raped was "asking" for it: there is no excuse for aggressive assault. But young people need to be educated to realize that true relationships develop from character rather than physical attraction and that true popularity wuill come from maintaining that stand.
